Supersymmetry (SUSY) proposed as an elementary symmetry for physics beyond the Standard Model has found important applications in various areas outside high-energy physics. In this talk, I will elaborate how to systematically implement supersymmetric quantum mechanics into a wide range of topological gapless systems, where the broken translational symmetry is effectively captured by an SUSY potential. It will also be shown that the dynamical SUSY breaking via the instanton effect over the SUSY potential valleys works as the underlying mechanism for the gap opening of the topological phases, and the magnitude of the instanton effect is proportional to the energy gap. Our theory can be applied to topological gapless quantum systems, leading to previously unexpected results: even an infinitesimal magnetic field can open a gap in topologically robust Dirac, Weyl, and nodal-line semimetal phases due to the dynamical SUSY breaking. Overall, the revealed connection between SUSY quantum mechanics and non-uniform topological gapless systems is able to elucidate previously ambiguous phenomena, provide guidance for future investigations, and open a new avenue for exploring topological systems.

报告人简介：

Professor Zidan Wang currently holds the position: Honorary and Emeritus Professor at The University of Hong Kong, Head of HK Institute of Quantum Science & Technology, Director of HK Branch for Quantum Science Center of GBA, and Chair Professor at SCNU. He received BSc and PhD from University of Science and Technology and Nanjing University in 1982 and 1988, respectively. After his postdoctoral career in Texas Center for Superconductivity at University of Houston, he joined Department of Physics at The University of Hong Kong as a faculty member in 1992, and was promoted to Professor in 2000 and Chair Professor in 2009. He, as the Corresponding/Senior author engaging in theoretical research of quantum physic, has published over 30 research articles in Physical Review Letters (PRL) and 190 in Physical Review (PR)-series. He also received various reputable awards for his research achievements, including the two prestigious China National Natural Science Awards in 2013 and 1995. Besides, Prof Wang has also held various admin/academic positions, including mainly Council Chairman and President of the Hong Kong Physical Society, Deputy Director of Quantum Science Center of GBA, Head of Physics Department and Director of the Centre for Theoretical and Computational Physics at the University of Hong Kong.
